Cat Advice
Owning a pet is an emotional connection and a commitment. Particularly for the British. We value our pets more than other nation, or so the stereotype goes.
To be fair, whatever your background, your cat will be a member of the family; cherished, looked after and fretted over like any other.
Aside from securing first-class pet insurance, there are other aspects to think which will contribute to the health and happiness of your four-legged friend.
For example, cats are known for their independent streak: you’ll suddenly become their best friend (as if by magic) around supper time, but in between, you might feel like a jilted lover; spurned for other attractions like sleeping or looking for radiators.
A happy cat is one with a regular, sensible meal time. If supper is like clockwork, a cat can more easily plan their day of sleeping and looking for places to sleep. Seriously though, a regular meal time helps if you are out at work all day and if you purchase one of those automatic feeders (extremely effective) than you can set them for a regular time and your cat won’t go hungry. Sometimes cats do have a problem with eating all the time (a trait not unknown in humans). An automated cat feeder will solve that by only releasing food at the appropriate times, representing tough love in the fight against feline obesity.
Perhaps even more important would be some sort of a tag for your cat. Shockingly, animal shelters report than 99% of cats they take in from the streets have no form of identification. If your cat does go missing, tagging is the precaution most likely to get them back to you. The tags themselves come in a variety of sizes, at reasonable price, from pet shop and vets across the country. A similar solution is to place a tag with your name, address and phone number which can be put inside a collar. Even if you never let your cat go outside, there is always a chance that he or she could slink their way through a window at some point.
In short, you need to know your cat will be independent and wilful. However when the time comes to look after them, they will let you know and all your care and love will not go unrewarded.
